Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, Pencipta Detektif Sherlock Holmes

Sir Arthur Conan Doyle (22 Mei 1859–7 Juli 1930)


Arthur Ignatius Conan Doyle dilahirkan di Edinburgh, Skotlandia pada tahun 1855 sebagai anak tertua dari keluarga yang kurang mampu. Walaupun keluarganya tidak kaya raya, tetapi orang tua Conan Doyle masih mampu mengirimkan ke sebuah sekolah yang bagus tempat dia menuntut ilmu dari usia sembilan tahun sampai dengan enam belas tahun.

Kemudian dia belajar ilmu kedokteran di Universitas Edinburgh. Setelah menyelesaikan pendidikannya di bidang kedokteran, Conan Doyle menghabiskan waktu selama hampir satu
tahun bekerja sebagai dokter di sebuah kapal yang berkeliling ke seluruh dunia.

Saat kembali ke Inggris, pada 1882 Conan membuka praktek kedokteran di Southsea yang terletak di daerah pantai di bagian selatan Inggris. Awalnya kehidupan Conan Doyle sangat susah karena dia hanya memiliki sangat sedikit pasien dan dia harus bekerja jeras untuk
memperoleh uang guna membiayai hidupnya.

Walaupun itu adalah satu masalah dalam praktek kedokterannya, namun semua itu sangat membantu Conan Doyle dalam mengasah kemampuannya untuk menulis karena dia banyak
mempunyai banyak waktu luang. Kemudian Conan Doyle pindah ke kota London untuk terus bekerja sebagai dokter. Namun pada tahun 1891 dengan penuh rasa percaya diri Conan Doyle beralih profesi dari dunia kedokteran dan memilih menjadi seorang penulis.

Selama perang Boer yang terjadi pada tahun 1899-1902 Conan Doyle menyumbang waktunya bekerja sebagai seorang dokter tentara di Afrika Selatan dan secara resmi hasil kerjanya
di Afrika Selatan itu diakui oleh pemerintah Inggris sehingga dia dianugrahi gelar “SIR”.

Sir Arthur Conan Doyle meninggal dunia pada tahun 1930. Conan Doyle adalah seorang penulis yang berdedikasi tinggi dan selama hidupnya dia menghasilkan berbagai macam buku dan tulisan. Walaupun dia juga menulis berbagai macam tulisan dengan pokok
masalah yang serius, dia menjadi terkenal karena buku-buku dan cerita-ceritanya tentang detektif Sherlock Holmes dan karena detektif Shelock Holmes ini pula dia dikenang sampai dengan hari ini.

Tokoh Sherlock holmes diciptakannya Pada tahun 1886, yang diilhami dari Dr. Joseph Bell, salah satu dosennya. Cerita pertama yang berjudul A Study in Scarlet (bahasa Indonesia: Penelusuran Benang Merah) ini diterima publik dengan baik, tetapi Sherlock holmes baru dikenal secara luas saat diterbitkan dalam sebuah cerita secara bersambung dalam Majalah Strand pada tahun 1891 yang kemudian cerita-cerita bersambung tersebut dikumpulkan menjadi satu yang berjudul Petualangan Sherlock Holmes.

Conan Doyle adalah seorang pria dengan banyak ide dan dia dengan segera menjadi bosan hanya karena menjadi terkenal dengan cerita tentang Sherlock Holmes. Dia menilai Tulsan-tulisannya yang lain lebih berbobot ada dia juga menulis buku tentang berbagai sejarah, termasuk menulis buku yang berjudul Perbuatan-perbuatan Berani Brigadir Gerard pada tahun
1896, buku serial fiksi ilmiah tentang Professor Challenger dan artikel-artikel yang berdasarkan pengalaman pribadi Conan Doyle selama mengalami Perang Boer dan Perang Dunia I.

Setelah kematian anak laki-lakinya Conan Doyle kemudian memperdalam minatnya yang lebih
mendalam dalam hal-hal spiritual. Bukunya yang terpenting dan yang paling akhir ditulis berjudul Sejarah Spiritualisme pada tahun 1926.

Walaupun sudah berusaha dengan berbagai macam cara untuk keluar dari karakter Sherlock Holmes tetap saja Conan Doyle tidak mampu keluar dari tokoh itu. Conan Doyle betul-betul berusaha mengakhiri hidup Sherlock Holmes dalam sebuah cerita yang diterbitkan pada tahun 1893 namun karena popularitas Sherlock Holmes sangat kuat sehingga para pembaca cerita
petualangan Sherlock Holmes memaksa Sir Conan Doyle untuk menghidupkan kembali tokoh itu.
